Soil, Containers, and Drainage: The Three Foundations of Successful Container Growing

Most beginner growers focus on seeds. The right seed matters โ€” but the environment the seed goes into matters more. You can take a reliably high-germinating seed and put it in the wrong soil, the wrong pot, or the wrong drainage situation, and it will fail. You can take a mediocre seed and put it in ideal conditions, and it will often surprise you.

Understanding soil, containers, and drainage is the difference between a guessing game and a predictable system.

Soil: What You Put In the Pot

Garden soil โ€” the kind from the backyard or from unlabeled bags at a hardware store โ€” does not belong in a container. In the ground, earthworms, microbes, and natural processes keep soil from compacting. In a pot, without those systems, garden soil becomes dense, waterlogged, and airless within weeks. Roots suffocate.

Use a quality potting mix. The differences that matter:

  • Perlite content โ€” those white particles that look like tiny foam balls. Perlite keeps the mix loose and well-draining. A good mix has visible perlite; if you don't see it, consider adding some
  • Coco coir or peat โ€” these hold moisture without becoming waterlogged and keep the mix from drying into a hard cake
  • No added fertilizer for seed starting โ€” "hot" soil with fertilizer can burn seedlings. For seeds, use a plain potting mix; begin feeding only after the first true leaves appear

One practical tip: if you're starting seeds, a lighter, finer mix works better than a chunky one. Seedling roots are thin and fragile โ€” they navigate through fine particles more easily than around large chunks.

Containers: What You Put the Soil In

Almost any container works, as long as it has one thing: drainage holes. Without them, excess water collects at the bottom of the pot, creating an anaerobic zone where roots rot.

Beyond drainage, the key decision is size:

  • Too small: the plant becomes rootbound, runs out of nutrients quickly, and dries out after every watering within a few days
  • Too large: excess soil around a small root system stays wet too long and creates the same root rot problem as no drainage
  • Right size: the pot diameter should be roughly as wide as the plant's mature spread, or one to two sizes larger than the plant's current root ball when transplanting

Material matters less than you'd think. Terracotta dries faster than plastic โ€” useful in humid climates, potentially inconvenient in dry ones. Both work. Choose what fits your aesthetic and watering habits.

Drainage: The System That Ties It Together

Good drainage means water moves freely through the soil, out the holes at the bottom, and away from the roots. Three things can break this system:

  1. Blocked drainage holes โ€” check that holes aren't covered by soil or sitting flush against a solid surface. Raise pots slightly on feet or pot risers so water can escape freely
  2. Saucers that collect water โ€” saucers under pots are useful for catching overflow, but if the pot sits in standing water constantly, roots will rot. Empty saucers after watering or use ones with built-in gaps
  3. Compacted soil โ€” soil that's been reused multiple times or overwatered repeatedly can compact and lose its structure. Water starts pooling on the surface rather than absorbing. This is a sign to repot with fresh mix

The Test That Tells You Everything

Stick your finger one inch into the soil. If it's dry, water. If it's moist, wait. If it's wet, wait longer and check your drainage.

This one test โ€” done before every watering decision โ€” prevents the two most common plant deaths: underwatering and overwatering. Most "mysterious" plant deaths are actually drainage and watering failures, not disease or pest problems.

Get these three foundations right and you've solved most of what can go wrong before it starts.
