Planning Your Fall Vegetable Garden: What to Start in July
Share
It might feel like the peak of summer, but the secret to an abundant autumn harvest is starting now. July is the perfect month to sow seeds for your second growing season. Here’s what you should be planting this month.
1. The Leafy Greens
Kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens actually taste better after a light frost. Start these now from seed, and they will be ready for your autumn kitchen. Lettuce and spinach can also be sown now, but they may need some shade until the weather cools down in August.
2. Root Vegetables
Carrots and beets take longer to mature than you think. Sowing them in mid-July gives them enough time to reach full size before the days get significantly shorter in October. Keep the seedbeds moist during germination—the hottest part of summer can be tough on tiny sprouts.
3. Broccoli and Cabbage
These cool-season favorites need a long lead time. Start your transplants indoors now, and they’ll be ready to go into the garden by late August. By the time they start heading up, the cooler nights of September will help them thrive.
