Feeding Your Plants: A Beginner's Guide to Fertilizing Container Gardens

Most beginner growers either never fertilize their plants, or they fertilize too much and too often. Both extremes cause problems. Understanding what fertilizer actually does — and when plants genuinely need it — resolves both.
Why Container Plants Need Feeding at All
In a garden bed, plants have access to a complex ecosystem of soil organisms that break down organic matter and release nutrients over time. In a container, that ecosystem does not exist. The potting mix provides a finite supply of nutrients that depletes as the plant grows and as water carries minerals out of the drainage holes.
Most quality potting mixes include enough fertilizer to sustain a plant for 4–8 weeks. After that, the plant is relying on whatever you provide.
Signs a plant may need feeding:
- Slow growth despite adequate light and water
- Pale green or yellowing leaves across the plant (not just lower leaves)
- Small, underdeveloped new leaves compared to older growth
- A plant that has been in the same pot for more than 2 months without being repotted
The Three Numbers on Every Fertilizer
Every fertilizer label shows three numbers — for example, 10-10-10 or 5-3-4. These represent the percentage by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Understanding what each does helps you choose the right product:
- Nitrogen (N) — promotes leaf and stem growth; the most important for foliage plants like coleus and for herbs like catnip and thyme that you harvest for leaves
- Phosphorus (P) — supports root development and flowering; important for petunia and viola during their blooming season
- Potassium (K) — strengthens overall plant health and stress resistance; important for perennials overwintering in containers
For most container herb and flower growing, a balanced formula (equal or near-equal numbers) works fine. You do not need to calculate specific ratios — a general-purpose liquid fertilizer does most of what container plants need.
Liquid vs Slow-Release: Which to Use
Liquid fertilizer is diluted in water and applied at watering time. It acts quickly — results are often visible within 7–10 days — but it needs to be applied regularly (usually every 2–4 weeks during the growing season). It gives you more control because you can stop easily if you see signs of overfeeding.
Slow-release granules are mixed into the soil and release nutrients gradually over 2–4 months. More convenient, less risk of overfeeding. The downside is that you cannot adjust quickly if the plant's needs change.
For beginners: liquid fertilizer is the better starting point because the results are visible and the dosing is adjustable.
How Often, and When to Stop
The general rule: fertilize during active growth (spring through early autumn); stop feeding about 6 weeks before the first expected frost. Plants slow down in winter and do not need — or benefit from — additional nutrients during dormancy.
For specific varieties:
- Coleus — feed every 2 weeks during active growth with a nitrogen-forward fertilizer; the foliage color becomes more vivid with adequate feeding
- Catnip and thyme — feed once a month at most; these are naturally low-nutrition plants and too much fertilizer produces soft, less aromatic growth
- Petunia — heavy feeders; fertilize every 1–2 weeks with a bloom-supporting formula (higher phosphorus) to sustain continuous flowering
- Viola — moderate feeder; once every 3–4 weeks with a balanced formula; too much nitrogen produces leaf growth at the expense of flowers
The Most Common Mistake
Over-fertilizing. The signs — leaf tip burn, salt crust on soil surface, wilting despite moist soil, rapid yellowing — are often mistaken for other problems and corrected with more fertilizer, which makes things worse.
The fix: flush the pot thoroughly with plain water to wash out excess fertilizer salts, then wait 2–3 weeks before feeding again at half the recommended dose. Less is reliably better than more when it comes to container plant nutrition.
Feed consistently and lightly. Notice the results. Adjust from there.
